SciStarter Celebrates 75 Years of the National Science Foundation with Nationwide Citizen Science and STEM Events

Interactive NSF STEM Day Events to Spotlight SciStarter and Science Near Me

For Immediate Release– The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) marks its 75th anniversary with a national celebration featuring NSF-funded SciStarter and Science Near Me. On this special occasion, eight community partners across the country will host interactive events showcasing these platforms and their impact on citizen science and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) engagement.

For 75 years, NSF has driven scientific research and innovation, expanding access to discovery and learning. NSF STEM Day, held on May 10, will highlight NSF-supported initiatives that connect the public with hands-on science opportunities.

SciStarter: Powering Citizen Science

SciStarter.org, a research affiliate of Arizona State University and North Carolina State University, is a digital hub linking millions of volunteers with thousands of citizen science and crowdsourcing projects. With NSF support (Award #1516703), SciStarter has expanded its platform, making it easier for individuals, educators, and researchers to collaborate on scientific research.

Science Near Me: Expanding STEM Access

Through an NSF-funded collaboration (Award #1906998) with Oregon State University, the Association of Science and Technology Centers, and COSI, SciStarter helped develop ScienceNearMe.orgβ€”a user-friendly web and mobile platform designed to connect families with STEM activities, museum programs, and citizen science projects nationwide. NSF’s Innovations in Development grant enables ScienceNearMe.org to streamline the discovery of STEM programs through a powerful digital search tool.
